The connected window display, the window display of tomorrow?
Even if I haven’t had the opportunity to experience this new technology first hand, there is no way I can avoid talking about this subject especially as it was presented to the general public at the 2015 mobile world congress which recently took place in Barcelona (From 2 to 5 march)
What is this connected window display ?
Your window display becomes a kind of computer or even a full-sized tablet, on which you can offer various animations, as some examples have been detailed in the 12:45 tv news on M6 :
- BNP invite you to play tennis with a virtual competitor from the pavement
- A real estate agency is able to virtually gave you a tour of the properties for sale
- Concerning fashion, the passer-by can scroll the items as with a tactile tablet, and can even try them on getting an accurate idea of how they fit.
- In another area, the discounts wall : one can imagine that in a near future, consumers will be able to load various offers displayed on an interactive wall thanks to an electronic card, to use discounts coupons later
The aim ?
The goal is to upgrade window displays to the level of experimentation.
You have probably noticed that, for a long time, and for a lot of products and services, from children’s snacks to body cream or even to household products, everything has become something to experiment. It’s now the turn of window display to be made more “experimental”
In the same spirit of the living models, this kind of strategy allows to create an event around a brand
What future can be envisaged ?
Just like the window displays occupied by living models remain an event nowadays, the connected window displays will be far from being the norm notably due to the cost of the operation needing digital communication specialists to coordinate these projects.
That said, this kind of stunt remains an opportunity for some brand to punctually make the buzz and boost their notoriety. These names choose to set up these events in their main points of sale like flagship stores, thereby and above all providing a “press window display” with great press coverage with indirect advertising thanks to blog and press citations.
In other words, an excellent tool to boost the notoriety of a brand or a range of products or services still little known, the impact being immediate. Like the brand IKKS used living models to find a faster recognition in Germany, the French cosmetic brand Yves Rocher used the new technologies and set up a connected window display in their stores which drain the most important traffic as part of the launch of a new range of products.
Such initiatives can also be included in the framework of lots of communication problematics, but have to be justified by an overall strategy, based on a carefully built strategy..
Finally, we are far beyond a simple window display décor, it deals with a new way of communication which needs to be employed effectively.
